Porcelain Jewellery Box — Cobalt Ground with Hand-Painted Rose Medallion & Gilt Mounts
A jewellery casket of decidedly European character, its domed lid and rectangular body finished in deep cobalt porcelain — a glaze of such depth and uniformity that it reads almost as lacquer. The lid is centred on a hand-painted oval medallion of pink roses rendered with botanical delicacy on an ivory ground, bordered by a gilt rope twist and flanked by white rococo scrollwork that spreads across the cobalt field like frost on glass. The overall composition speaks the language of the great European porcelain traditions — decorative, considered, and made to be kept.
The body is mounted throughout in gilt metal: a central cartouche of cast acanthus ornament occupies the front face, decorative gilt borders frame the lower edges, and four small cabriole feet in burnished gold lift the piece from any surface with a lightness entirely at odds with its evident solidity. The hinge is clean and well-fitted, the lid sitting flush when closed.
A piece made to be placed on a dressing table and left there — the kind of object that organises a room around itself.
