Persian Khatam Micro-Mosaic Box — Hand-Painted Peacock Ceramic Tile Lid with Gold Border

Handcrafted

A jewellery and keepsake box of jewel-like intricacy, combining two of the most demanding decorative traditions of the Islamic world in a single object of exceptional refinement. The lid presents a hand-painted ceramic tile panel of vivid polychrome character — a peacock in full display rendered in cobalt, teal, and jade green against a white ground dense with floral sprays, exotic birds, and pomegranate motifs in coral, yellow, and forest green. The painting is executed with the miniaturist precision of a tradition that measures quality in millimetres, the detail extraordinary at close range and immediately striking from a distance.

The tile panel is set within a border of crimson and gold stripes that frames it with the formality of a picture, and the body of the box below is entirely covered in khatam micro-mosaic — the ancient Persian technique of assembling thousands of individually cut pieces of wood, bone, and metal wire into a repeating geometric star pattern of near-impossible fineness. The result is a surface of deep, warm colour — amber, dark wood, and ivory — that reads as textile from a distance and as pure precision work up close. Small bracket feet lift the box from its surface, completing the piece with a detail of quiet elegance.

A collector's object of the first order — suited to a writing desk, a dressing table, or a display shelf where both the ceramic painting and the khatam mosaic work can be properly appreciated.
