Orientalist Figural Torchère Lamps — Polychrome Bronze Male & Female Pair with Frosted Glass Flame Shade

Handcrafted

A striking pair of Orientalist figural torchère lamps, each cast in polychrome bronze and presenting a standing figure in elaborate costume — the female adorned in a jewelled bodice, draped skirt, and turban headdress, the male in a wrapped loincloth and turban — each figure raising one arm aloft to support a gilded lotus bowl from which a frosted white flame-form glass shade rises. The polychrome finish is rich and detailed: deep warm bronze skin tones, terracotta and gold drapery, gilt jewellery, and painted textile patterns rendered with the decorative ambition of the nineteenth-century Orientalist tradition at its most assured.

Each figure stands on a circular gilt plinth supported by an ornate scrollwork base of cast gilt bronze — acanthus scrolls, foliate brackets, and decorative feet of considerable weight and presence. The contrast between the dark patinated bronze of the figures and the bright gilt of the base and lotus bowl is immediate and theatrical. The frosted glass flame shades complete the composition with a soft, warm luminosity that flatters the polychrome surface of the figures below.

Presented as a matching male and female pair, these lamps are objects of considerable decorative ambition — suited to a grand entrance hall, a formal library, or a collector's salon where the Orientalist tradition is appreciated on its own aesthetic terms.
