Mother of Pearl & Wood Serpentine Commode — Arabesque Inlay with White Marble Top

A serpentine-front commode of extraordinary decorative ambition, its four drawers entirely covered in a continuous arabesque composition of mother of pearl set into a deep wood ground — sweeping foliate scrolls and floral medallions flowing across each drawer front without interruption, the iridescent shell catching the light in shifting tones of champagne, gold, and green. Geometric border registers of camel bone stringing separate each drawer and frame the pilaster columns on either side, the decorative programme extending to the scalloped arch base where the same arabesque inlay continues to the very foot of the piece. The top is finished in white marble, its cool veined surface a deliberate counterpoint to the warmth and intricacy of the inlaid body below.
