Khatam & Hand-Painted Lacquer Chess Board — Cobalt Blue Floral Border with Shaped Edge, Board Only
A chess and backgammon board of striking chromatic presence, distinguished above all by its shaped outline — the four sides of the board cut in a graceful scalloped curve rather than a straight edge, a refinement that immediately sets this piece apart from conventional board formats and speaks to the ambition of its maker. The border is painted in a deep cobalt blue ground dense with white and gold floral sprays — chrysanthemums, peonies, and trailing leaves rendered with the fluency of a painter working at full confidence — punctuated at each corner and midpoint by elaborately painted medallions in burgundy, pink, coral, and forest green, each one a miniature composition of arabesques, cloud scrolls, and floral devices of considerable complexity.
The playing field is set within a fine gold border and presents an alternating grid of khatam micro-mosaic squares — two distinct micro-mosaic patterns alternating across the board surface, one in amber and black geometric star forms, the other in a tighter dark ground pattern, creating a playing surface of exceptional visual richness. The shaped edge of the board is finished cleanly, the paint and lacquer carried around the curve without interruption.
A board of this character — shaped outline, cobalt border, medallion corners — is among the most ambitious expressions of the hand-painted lacquer chess board tradition. Suited to a library, a collector's study, or displayed flat on a coffee table as a decorative object in its own right.
