Handknotted Wool Rug — Mauve Medallion with Ivory Field & Polychrome Floral Border

A finely knotted wool rug of classical medallion composition, its centrepiece a large hexagonal form in soft dusty mauve — a colour of considerable subtlety, sitting between lavender and grey — set within a cream inner field populated with stylised cypress trees, botanical sprigs, and small animal forms worked in sage, rust, and charcoal. The medallion itself is layered concentrically, each ring introducing a new motif or colour until the composition resolves at its heart in a small diamond of deep amber and crimson.

The border system is dense and accomplished: multiple guard stripes of diminishing scale surround the field, the outermost band running a continuous repeat of cross-star forms in rust, olive, slate, and ivory against a dark chocolate ground. The whole is framed by a further narrow dark border, creating a strong edge that contains the complexity within. The fringe at both short ends is thick and twisted, knotted at intervals in the traditional manner.

This is a rug of quiet classical sophistication — detailed enough to reward close inspection, composed enough to work as a single harmonious object. At this scale it functions as an accent piece: beneath a coffee table, in a study, or at the foot of a bed.
