Handknotted Wool Beni Ourain Rug — Ivory Field with Architectural Tribal Lattice
A dense, deep-pile wool rug in undyed natural ivory, its surface animated by an expansive composition of dark chocolate tribal motifs drawn with the confident imprecision of the hand. Twin arch forms rise through the upper field — architectural in suggestion, abstract in execution — their interiors filled with a lattice of diamonds, crosses, hooked lozenges, and talismanic marks that speak the language of a weaving tradition passed from one generation to the next without ever being written down.
The lower half shifts into a horizontal register of zigzag bands and checkerboard fills, grounding the freer geometry above with a denser, more rhythmic pattern. A narrow zigzag guard runs along the upper edge, and the fringe — long, knotted, and uneven — falls naturally from both short ends, the mark of a piece made entirely by hand. The centre seam, visible as a subtle tonal shift, confirms this is a two-panel rug joined in the traditional manner.
The ivory ground catches warm light beautifully, shifting between cream and pale sand through the day. This is a rug with genuine presence — the kind that anchors a room rather than decorates it.
