Hand-Engraved Copper Vase — Arabesque & Calligraphic Motifs on Darkened Patina

A copper vase of classical amphora proportion, its entire surface worked by hand in the engraving tradition — arabesques, scrolling vine tendrils, and calligraphic inscriptions chased into the metal with a depth and confidence that speaks of long practice. The patina is deep and uneven in the manner of a genuinely aged piece: warm copper tones emerge through a dark oxidised ground, the raised lines of the engraving catching the light whilst the recessed background remains in shadow, creating a relief-like quality that changes with every shift in illumination.

The composition is organised into distinct registers: a narrow band of continuous foliate scroll runs beneath the rim, while the body is given over to a broad field of interlacing arabesque enclosing calligraphic passages — text worked into the decoration as ornament, as meaning, and as craft simultaneously. A stepped collar at the base transitions the body to a flat foot ring, finishing the form cleanly. The neck is plain and unadorned, allowing the eye to rest before descending into the richness below.
