Cloisonné Enamel Vase — Ebony Ground with Peony Bouquet & Polychrome Floral Bands — Set of 2
A vase of exceptional decorative richness, worked in the cloisonné technique — fired enamel set within fine gold wire partitions that divide the surface into fields of pure, luminous colour. The ground is a deep ebony black against which a generous bouquet of pink and crimson peonies in full bloom is rendered with botanical confidence, the petals layered and shaded, the leaves a vivid botanical green that anchors the composition. The flowers fill the widest register of the body with an expansiveness that makes the piece read as a garden captured in enamel.
Above and below the floral field, the decoration shifts register: a band of sky blue bears scrolling cloud forms and pendant floral drops in red and green; a white wave scroll provides transition; and the shoulder is given to a turquoise ground of further botanical ornament in the same accomplished palette. The interior of the neck is glazed in a clear sky blue, visible from above. A narrow gilt band finishes the rim, the brass substrate of the cloisonné technique glimpsed at the base.
Offered as a pair, these vases are best displayed together — on a console, a mantelpiece, or flanking a central object — where the symmetry of the composition and the depth of the enamel work can be fully appreciated.
