Champlevé Enamel Bronze Vase — Figural Court Scene with Elephant-Head Handles — Set of 2

A bronze vase of considerable antiquarian weight, worked in the champlevé technique — enamel fired into carved recesses in the dark bronze body, the metal itself forming the outlines of the composition rather than added wire. The result is a surface of unusual depth and solidity, the colours appearing almost embedded in the metal rather than applied to it, the whole acquiring a patina and presence that speaks unmistakably of age and of a craft tradition at the height of its ambition.

The principal field of the body is given over to a continuous figural scene — robed courtly figures in animated groupings, rendered in ivory, saffron, rose, and teal against a ground of deep verdigris green and sky blue, the narrative unfolding around the full circumference of the vessel. Above, a band of scrolling foliate ornament in teal and gold separates the scene from the shoulder, where further decorative registers continue to the neck. Two elephant-head handles flank the shoulder, cast in bronze with trunks curled downward — a detail of sculptural invention that elevates the piece beyond the merely decorative.
