Antique High Atlas Tribal Carpet — Double Medallion in Slate Blue & Saffron, Hand-Knotted Wool

Handcrafted

A striking example of the hand-knotted tribal carpet tradition of the High Atlas, this rug presents the classic double medallion composition in a palette of exceptional richness — a deep slate blue field anchoring two connected ivory and terracotta medallions at the centre, framed by a wide saffron yellow border alive with repeating geometric rosettes, diamond forms, and stylised floral motifs in burnt orange, black, and ochre. The fringe, in the same warm gold as the border, completes the composition with the informality characteristic of nomadic weaving at its most assured.

The field medallions are executed with a geometric precision that belies the spontaneity of tribal weaving — each diamond, hook, and stepped form placed with deliberate intention within a composition that draws the eye inward and holds it. The inner border of deep black punctuated with repeating rosette clusters creates a firm visual boundary between the field and the outer guard stripes, lending the rug a formal structure unusual in tribal work of this type.

Hand-knotted in natural wool using traditional vegetable-derived dyes, this carpet carries the warmth and depth of colour that only age and authentic dyeing technique can produce. A collector's piece as much as a functional object — suited to a grand living room, a library floor, or hung as a textile work in its own right.
