Andalusian Lustreware Ceramic Vase — Hand-Painted Arabesque on Ivory & Burnt Sienna Ground

A vessel of genuine antiquarian significance, worked in the lustreware tradition that flourished across the medieval Islamic world and reached its apogee in the ceramics of Andalusia — a technique of extraordinary difficulty in which metallic oxides are fired onto a tin-glazed ground in a reduction atmosphere, producing the characteristic warm copper-sienna lustre that no other ceramic process can replicate. The result is a surface that seems lit from within, shifting between terracotta, burnished copper, and deep auburn as the light moves across it.

The form is classical and assured: a globular body set on a raised circular foot, rising through a narrow waist flanked by two small moulded handles terminating in trefoil forms, to a wide flared rim finished in plain ivory glaze — a deliberate restraint at the opening that frames the richness below. The entire surface is covered in fine hand-painted arabesque — scrolling vine tendrils, geometric cartouches, and interlacing foliate forms drawn with the fluency of a tradition mastered over generations. A central medallion on the body bears a geometric pendant motif of particular refinement.

A piece of this technique and condition belongs in a collection, not merely in a room. It is an object with a history — made by a hand trained in one of the great decorative traditions of the Mediterranean world, and deserving of a place that acknowledges what it is.
