Andalusian Lustreware Ceramic Amphora — Twin Winged Handles with Cobalt & Copper Arabesque — Set of 2

Handcrafted

A pair of ceramic amphoras of exceptional presence, worked in the lustreware tradition and distinguished by their elaborate twin handles — broad, flat, and scalloped at the edges like the wings of an architectural finial, each painted with the same density of arabesque that covers the body. It is a form of considerable rarity: the handle treatment here goes far beyond function, becoming instead a lateral extension of the vessel's decorative programme, the scalloped edges adding drama and silhouette to a piece already rich in surface incident.

The body is divided into registers of descending scale: a cylindrical neck bearing a frieze of scrolling vine in copper lustre; a globular mid-section carrying the principal decoration — cobalt blue arrowhead and diamond motifs interlaced with copper arabesque on an ivory ground, the two colours working in sharp, confident contrast; and a raised circular foot continuing the pattern to the base. The cobalt is deep and saturated, the copper lustre warm and metallic, the ivory ground luminous between them. Every surface is worked, every register considered.

Offered as a matching pair, these amphoras represent lustreware at its most architecturally ambitious — pieces made not simply to be beautiful, but to command the space around them.
