The Art of Mother of Pearl Inlay — How It's Made

Mother of pearl inlay is one of the most demanding decorative techniques in the history of furniture making — and one of the most immediately beautiful. A surface that shifts between ivory, champagne, and iridescent gold depending on the light, alive in a way that paint or lacquer never is.

The Material

Mother of pearl is the inner lining of certain mollusc shells, processed into thin sheets. Its characteristic iridescence comes from thousands of translucent layers of aragonite, each refracting light slightly differently. This is why the surface seems to move — not a trick of the finish, but the physics of the shell itself. At Al Maleh House, we select shell for consistency of tone within each piece, so a surface reads as a unified whole rather than a patchwork.

The Cutting

Each tile is cut by hand using small saws and files. On a geometric pattern, every angle must be accurate; on a floral arabesque, every curve must flow without interruption. There is no machine that replicates this judgement. A skilled craftsman reads the grain of the shell, feels the resistance of the material, and makes the dozens of small corrections that translate a drawn pattern into a fitted surface.

The Inlay

Each tile is set individually into the substrate — wood, ebonised wood, or coloured resin — checked for level, pressed into place, then grouted and sanded flat so that shell and ground read as a single continuous plane. On a large console, this process takes weeks. On a monumental armoire, months. The time cannot be compressed without compromising the fit, and the quality of the fit is what separates a piece that ages beautifully from one that does not.

The Result

A finished mother of pearl surface changes with the light, the angle of view, the season. This is what makes inlaid furniture genuinely alive in an interior — present in a way that rewards living with. Every piece in our collection is made in our Marrakech atelier.
